What is Gushu Dianhong?

Dianhong is a group of palatable Yunnan black tea. One of which uses fresh leaves from Gushu (ancient tea trees that have been living over 300 years old as opposed to the common tea bush), is a speciality of Lincang, Fengqing, Baoshan, Xishuangbanna, Dehong, and other places in southern and southwestern Yunnan Province.

Southwest China, represented by Yunnan, is the origin of tea trees in the world, and it is still the place with the largest area of ​​Gushu forests and the largest number of Gushu and wild tea trees in China and the world. The rain is abundant, the soil is fertile, and the mild subtropical climate, coupled with the diligence and wisdom of the Bulang people, one of the ethnic minority groups living in Yunnan.

The Bulang people cultivated Gushu. In the use of biodiversity to control tea plant diseases and insect pests, through the natural fermentation of fallen leaves and wild fruits, it provides a rich fertiliser for tea trees and effectively suppresses the growth of weeds.

Dianhong production areas exist in 20 counties in 6 prefectures, including Lincang, Baoshan, Simao, Xishuangbanna, Dehong, and Honghe along the Lancang River in Yunnan. There are no distinctive season changes in Yunnan Province.

Every year from the end of October to May of the next year, the airflow in the Indo-Pakistani region and the desert region of Iran, there is sufficient sunshine, dry air, and low rainfall, forming Yunnan’s dry season.

From June to early October, there’s an abundance of rainfall caused by the southwest monsoon of the equatorial ocean and the southeast monsoon of the tropical ocean, the temperature is high and the humidity is heavy. forming Yunnan’s rainy season.

The annual average temperature is 17-22 , the average annual rainfall is between 1,200-2,000 mm, and the relative humidity is above 80%. The soil is dominated by brick-red soil and red soil, with a PH value between 4.5 and 5.5. The loose humus soil is deep and the organic content is extremely high. Yunnan is located in the southwestern border of China, 120 of 128 counties in the province produce tea, and the altitude of 23 key tea-producing counties is between 1,000 and 2,000 metres. The annual average temperature is maintained at 15 ℃ -18 ℃, and the average temperature difference between day and night exceeds 10 ℃. From early March to the end of November, 9 months of tea can be harvested in a year.

Mountains and rivers in Yunnan form a wide range of deep valleys. The intricate topography such as broom-shaped terrains makes northwest Yunnan high and southeast low, which resists the invasion of the northwestern continental climate and accepts the climate from the Indian Ocean and the Pacific.

The warm monsoon produces horizontal and vertical changes in temperature with the terrain, forming a unique plateau climate and mountain climate. The tea area is surrounded by clouds and mist, with abundant rainfall and fertile reddish soil full of rich humus, a quality soil, forming unique and impressive natural conditions for tea production.


After brewing, the aroma is fresh and natural, showing light honey and fruit aroma; the infusion colour is bright red and orange, golden, clear and bright; the taste is easy drinking, mellow and refreshing, with long-lasting flavour. After brewing more than 10 times, the aroma is still fragrant, and the sweet mellow lingers and fills the mouth with YUYUN, a pleasant aftertaste.

What are the differences between Gushu Dianhong and ordinary black tea?

1. Raw materials and tree age

Gushu Dianhong is processed from the raw materials of an ancient tree over 300 years old.

Ordinary tea is made from the tea bush.

2. Tea shape

Gushu Dianhong dried leaves have a clear distinctive texture, the leaf size is more varied. Ordinary leaves are thin and tightly curled.

3. Aroma

Because of its older age, Gushu Dianhong takes deeper roots and absorbs more minerals. The aroma is said to be more stable and long-lasting. The ordinary one has a short fragrance.

4. Infusion colour

Gushu Dianhong creates a golden yellow infusion, and the texture is clean. The ordinary infusion is generally a cloudy red.
